FLARE 1: Beyond Body | 9th -14th February | Gallery North | Newcastle, UK
FLARE 1: Beyond Body was a five day, two evening programme of events. An investigation into the non-material and the intangible aspects of communication, concentrating on the evolution of mind-body relationships and en-counters in performance art and mind/body practices. Beyond Body was set up as an active inter-disciplinary inquiry in disrupting habitual thought processes and looked to practice and explore ways of knowing that can be visceral, intuitive and precognitive. Encouraging participation, debate and reflection a series of workshops, performances, films and presentations programmed to open and share knowledge and research processes. Over the five days through embodied engagement methods, and through the insights of a variety of academics, artists and scientists the programme endeavoured to excavate personal boundaries and took active steps to pursue how our senses and mind might extend beyond the physical body.

FLARE 2: In/visible | 14th, 16th & 17th May | Gallery North | Newcastle, UK
FLARE 2: In/visible was a continuation of the investigation initiated in FLARE: Beyond Body concentrating on the evolution of mind-body relationships and encounters in performance art. The programme started on the 14th May with performances running throughout the day and evening. FLARE 2 was part of the annual city wide Tyne and Wear Museums Late Shows programme. 25 artists from Newcastle, York, Belfast, Berlin and Vienna presented work ranging from a five hour long outdoor, group Cumulator piece, to solo endurance pieces and back to back 15 minute performances. A two-day workshop by invited American artist Elizabeth Ward was also programmed.
